Ed O’Neill’s audition was simple but it won show runners over. He walked into the house with his shoulders slumped and gave a sigh of defeat. That was all that producers needed to see in order to know that he perfectly captured the character.

Al Bundy was a struggling women’s show salesman, a job that was truly unsatisfying. Add in a dysfunctional family, and Al was totally emotionally drained. Ed perfectly captured this feeling with his audition.
